API management: why should you care?

In any area of life, communication matters: in a conversation, in a project, or even when reading material, you need to understand what’s being discussed to draw conclusions and carry out the activity at hand.

In IT, an API serves exactly that purpose: it’s a kind of communication standard within a project so developers can use data within scope to provide functionality and completeness to the final product.

That’s where API management becomes important. Without a clear language for each project, it’s impossible to understand how to use the tools, methods, and protocols that must be respected. And since each interface is connected to a specific product or service, API management should not only exist: it should also be highly customizable.

What is API management?

API management is, basically, the IT process of publishing, promoting, and managing application programming interfaces (APIs) in a more secure and scalable environment.

To understand why API management matters within a project, consider that the interface is a means to an end, not the end itself. Its documentation set is what ensures the whole process is completed in the best way and within the expected timeline.

The core steps of API management are defining rules, documenting the API, and making requests to it. After these three steps are done, internal systems and the number of concurrent applications come into play to test whether everything is correct and working as expected.

If something goes wrong, it’s time to go back a few steps and use the API to understand where the problem happened and how to overcome it. That’s how a good interface works: it solves bottlenecks instead of becoming an even bigger bottleneck, accumulating errors and causing losses for IT teams.

Benefits of API management

There are different ways to implement API management correctly, and the best choice depends on the objectives and size of your project.

More robust API management tools enable support features for end users based on interface definition and documentation, simplifying the process. They can also use newer technologies to provide resources beyond the traditional packages we see in service‑oriented architecture (SOA).

A major benefit of API management is that, when the strategy is well executed, a company can create new sales channels and improve relationships with customers and prospects through IT resources. Since API management strengthens interactions among brands, customers, and partners, it can become an ally not only for marketing but also for finance, in what companies call the “API economy.”

In addition, API management can support publishing interfaces for external partners, external developers, and any other fronts that need unrestricted access to data and services.

Leveraging the capabilities offered by API management tools is also a way to deepen customer interaction and the experience inside the company’s digital platform. It can also be extremely helpful for organizations that want to improve development, business, analysis, security, and data protection parameters.
